Whenever a character breaks a Virgin Mary Statue, they later end up dead.

The Virgin Mary statue is symbolic of the Island itself. The Virgin Mary represents good; the heroin represents evil. The Virgin Mary statue protects the world from the evil heroin by keeping it contained and hidden; when the statue is broken and the heroin released, it causes problems for the survivors, for example Charlie and Claire and Eko. Likewise, the Island is "good" whereas the Smoke Monster is evil. The Island contains the Smoke Monster to prevent it from being unleashed on the world. As we learn by the last season, it's the intention of the Smoke to break free from the Island and cause havoc for the survivors and the world.
