The remaining survivors on the island continue to deal with the shifts through time. Flashforwards show Hurley's rampant attempts to revive Sayid after an attack by unknown assailants, meanwhile Ben further his efforts to return the Oceanic Six to the island.
On the island, the remaining survivors are attacked at the beach camp by a barrage of flaming arrows. Most of the survivors are able to flee the beach, however, Neil is struck and burns to death, and James "Sawyer" Ford and Juliet Burke are separated from the group. Lost in the jungle, they are come across by a group of armed military men who demand to know who they are, and assert that the island is theirs. Moments away from cutting off Juliet's hand to extract information from them, John Locke ambushes the men, helping Sawyer and Juliet free themselves.
In 2007, following the events of Because You Left, Jack Shephard and Ben Linus part ways, with Ben taking Locke's body to a butcher for safe keeping. Jack is instructed to collect any personal items he wishes to keep and meet up with Ben in six hours. Meanwhile, Kate Austen and Aaron Littleton, her adoptive son, have fled their home to escape lawyers demanding a maternity test. They meet up with Sun-Hwa Kwon at a hotel, where Sun implies that Kate should take whatever measures are necessary to protect Aaron. Sun forgives Kate for leaving her husband, Jin-Soo Kwon, on the freighter when it exploded.
Meanwhile, Hugo "Hurley" Reyes and Sayid Jarrah are on the run after they are attacked at their safehouse; Hurley drives the unconscious Sayid, who has been hit by a drugged dart, to his parents' house. On the way, Hurley hallucinates deceased Oceanic Flight 815 survivor and former police officer Ana-Lucia Cortez, who gives him advice on how to avoid the real cops. Upon arriving home, Hurley's dad, David, covers for them when the police show up and suggests that Hurley take Sayid to the hospital. Hurley refuses, and David ends up taking Sayid to Jack, who is successful in reviving him. At home, Hurley confesses to his mother Carmen that the Oceanic Six have been lying; she believes him. Later, Ben suddenly shows up at the house and tries to convince Hurley to go with him to meet up with the rest of the Oceanic Six, saying they all wanted the same thing -- to go back to the island. Hurley wavers for a moment, then runs outside where he knows the police are watching the house, and turns himself in. (Earlier Sayid had told Hurley to do the opposite of whatever Ben wanted, but in effect he also did the opposite of what Ana Lucia said.) In the final scene, Ben visits Ms. Hawking, who tells him she has found the island and that Ben only has seventy hours to return with the Oceanic Six.
"Why there's a dead Pakistani on my couch?'"
- - Carmen
"Who is Sayid? I thought he was your friend."
"He is my friend. But he's also got this double-life where he does crazy ninja moves and spy stuff. But he's a good guy."
- - Carmen and Hurley
"John's casket is outside in a carpet van. I need to move it somewhere safe."
"Safe? He's dead isn't he?"
- - Ben and Jack
- Ms. Hawking is approached by Ben regarding his attempts to reach the island again. She had earlier met Desmond in Flashes Before Your Eyes at a jewelery store, and told him that, even though he knew what would happen between him and Penny, he could not change it, as the timeline had a way of "course-correcting" itself.
