I made the logo contest logo as ugly as possible so that I would encourage the great artists out there to contribute! I also didn't want to unintentionally influence anyone by specifying any particular color schemes. Please let me know if you have any feedback. --Admin 22:16, 14 April 2006 (PDT)

Q & A

Page II Formatting Issue

On page two of the entries, the tables for entries 91 and 92 seem to be fused together somehow...the numbers for all entries after were off accordingly. I adjusted the entry numbers, and cleaned up the code for the tables on 91 and 92, but it didn't fix the problem so I can't figure out what is wrong with it. Smeagol 18:43, 27 April 2006 (PDT)

Do entries have to be uploaded to the Lostpedia server, or are we permitted to host them on our own servers and link to them? I've been doing this to save time and bandwidth, but if it's required I'll gladly move the images over. Smeagol

According to the contest rules, uploading would be required. --skks 13:52, 18 April 2006 (PDT)
The rules state that after you've created and saved your logo, you should "Upload your logo." The rules do not specify that entries should be uploaded to Lostpedia's server, so I uploaded them to my own webspace via FTP. However, if it is preferable that they be on the Lostpedia server, I would gladly upload them here, however most of my entries are on page 1, which has now been locked. Additionally, I am not the only entrant to have uploaded and hosted my images elsewhere, and I don't think it would be fair to disqualify anyone else who might have uploaded their images elsewhere and doesn't happen to read this FAQ page. Smeagol 14:01, 18 April 2006 (PDT)
Nitpicking are we? It would come to reason that it wouldn't be mentioned unless it meant that it should be uploaded to the lostpedia server, but I didn't write the rules so I can't give you a 100% answer on that. Personally I won't disqualify a logo suggestion based on whether they're on this server or some other one, unless the server in question is down while I'm picking my favourites for the 'final'. --skks 14:34, 18 April 2006 (PDT)
Sounds like a good plan. I apologize, I didn't mean to come across as overbearing, I was just trying to clarify why I was unsure of the rule on this. To be honest, I'd actually like to host my entries on Lostpedia, but I can't change the links because page one is locked. Is it possible I could upload the images and write out the adjusted wiki code for the first page, and then a sysop could update the old page? Thanks, --Smeagol 15:54, 18 April 2006 (PDT)
No need to apologise. I suppose I can unprotect the page so you can get your adjustments done. --skks 19:29, 18 April 2006 (PDT)

Hi, iv made a logo, and i really dont have clue how to upload it, can someone please help? - -User:Charliesfate

there is a link at the bottom of the advertisement on the left -- User:kilkenny
Please could you explain how to submit your logo? manicpaniccomix

I just made a logo, but how do i upload it? --TuX

It looks like you figured it out. Nice work! --Admin 12:58, 15 April 2006 (PDT)

I am brazilian.. if i won, i will receive the prizes??? --z0n3

Yes, even Brazillians are eligible. :) Good luck! --Admin 12:58, 15 April 2006 (PDT)

What was wrong with the previous logo? I like that one; than any ones here.--Meterman

Royalty Free Images

Apart from GimpSavvy, there is another great royalty free stock photography website I'd recommend called MorgueFile. Good luck to all! Smeagol 14:59, 16 April 2006 (PDT)

I uploaded 2 logos why arent they on the entrys?

You didn't edit them in on the article, consult the RTFM-section of this page --skks 15:02, 18 April 2006 (PDT)

So ANIMATED GIFS are out? I just want to say animation can be one of the best images to grab attention.

They're not against the rules if that's what you're asking. --skks 00:04, 20 April 2006 (PDT)

Entry Numbers

Now there are two entry #54s. Smeagol 13:54, 19 April 2006 (PDT)

it seems that salaris put his logo on the top and changed a few numbers to hide it :/
I fixed it. Salaris is now #66. Admin 16:33, 19 April 2006 (PDT)

Multiple Entries?

Are multiple entries for a single user allowed? Smeagol 19:46, 15 April 2006 (PDT)

By any means! remember the naming method, that's why there's a number at the end. are you so good that tou will actually force us to choose from your wondrous creations! I'll pay to see that! †††GodEmperorOfHell††† --19:49, 15 April 2006 (PDT)

Some suggestions

GIF format has a colour limit of 256, it uses dithering to take care of that, but it leads to annoying little dots all over the place that can be seen in some of the entries. Ofcourse if your logo uses less than 256 colours, there's no problem - but you have to turn off the dithering to make it look good. PNG on the other hand doesn't have many limitations, the only thing it doesn't do that GIF does is animation - and animated logos get annoying very quickly. --skks 12:17, 15 April 2006 (PDT)

I agree... Animated logos get very annonying! It takes a special kind of artist to pull off an animated logo that works. --Admin 12:55, 15 April 2006 (PDT)

Yay - Please don't even consider animated GIF Logos. They only look good if they move very slow with many frames which usually means the filesize is really big --aurora glacialis 14:13, 15 April 2006 (PDT)

For future reference

A few of the entries include material directly from the show or from the show advertising, however good it might look, it's still copyrighted material. The reason we need a new logo is because the old one had some copyright issues on it, would be a shame to repeat the same mistake. --skks 11:55, 15 April 2006 (PDT)

if i got a permission??? --z0n3
I don't think that would matter, as everyone else would have to get the same permission too, ofcourse the discussion is academic as the contest rules prohibit the use of copyrighted images in the first place, with permission or without one. --skks 12:56, 15 April 2006 (PDT)
# You must not infringe on other's intellectual property (NO COPYRIGHTED PHOTOS)
if i have a permission i'm not infringing anything.. but sure.. if I got a permission(its probably impossible to get one) --z0n3
Skks, you should reply to the logos that you think are in violation. There's definitely a couple that are troubling (to me) - but I also have an entry in the contest, so I don't want to seem biased. --John Resig 12:43, 15 April 2006 (PDT)
Well, I hate pulling rank and I don't want to point fingers, I'm also not very good at nice - so I don't want to piss anyone off. The infringements that I see are with the photos that have material from the show itself (like a screencap) or from the various ad campaigns. I doubt that the logos in question will make it to the end because of these factors, but in the end, the choice is not mine anyway. I will bring the topic up with some of the other sysops and we'll see what will be done. --skks 12:56, 15 April 2006 (PDT)
Yes - obviously some people should read the intro first ;-) - Using images from the ABC Webshop is not a good idea, unless someone really would want to contact abc and ask them for permission... I don't think the island-photos are protected - at least there are many free island photos avaiable. Howver the Dharma Logo may be protected by ABC as are most likely any screencaps or photos of the characters... --aurora glacialis 16:04, 15 April 2006 (PDT)
Sure.. i made one logo really really great, but i will put he only if i receive the e-mail with the wikipedia permission to use the base of her logo! if i receive the permission no problem, right?? --z0n3

So, for the avoidance of doubt - no screencaps, right? ciphergoth 06:03, 17 April 2006 (PDT)

The rules clearly state (NO COPYRIGHTED PHOTOS), permissions aren't really the issue, it's a simple true/false situation, it doesn't get any simpler than that. You can have a permission, but the picture will still be copyrighted, and if the picture is copyrighted, it's a no-go. Whether screencaps are copyrighted is debatable, but just to play it safe - use free images or make your own. --skks 06:15, 17 April 2006 (PDT)

So the Dharma logo is a no go, huh? Should we assume that if our entry is off the first page , it is in violation? I don't mind trying again...wasn't keen on first attempt :) user:manicpaniccomix

Colored or blurred Logos

I've seen there are some colored logos in the contest - I think it would be good to make a screenshot of them "in action" to see if they fit the rest of the page design - maybe the page design and coloring can be adapted to the color theme of these logos? But as you see on the intentionally ugly logo for the contest, Not all colors fit into the current color scheme ;-) --aurora glacialis 16:09, 15 April 2006 (PDT)

Another note: Images with a blurry or semitransparent or "fading" outline are not truely transparent (even if they are saved as GIF), if you have to give a white "Matte" (background) color when saving to make it look good. This is obviously not a good choice if you want a logo that looks good on all backgrounds. (try viewing them on a colored background). PNG has a feature of semi-transparency but that is not supported by all browsers. --aurora glacialis 17:06, 20 April 2006 (PDT)

Entries with Copyrighted material

I am sorry, I don't mean to be a sysop from hell (which I am) but we should start disqualifying automatically those who do not follow that rule. Need more votes from syspos here. †††GodEmperorOfHell††† --19:38, 15 April 2006 (PDT)

Any logo that contains copyrighted material (or violated any other rules) won't make it to the "voting round". I do like seeing all of the different logo ideas! Let's hold off on disqualifying any until we get to the "voting round" Admin 23:14, 15 April 2006 (PDT)

I do not believe that the bagua logo is in breach of copyright even though it looks like the Dharma logo. MarcusUK --05:29, 16 April 2006 (BST)

upload

I made an awesome logo now how do I upload it?!?!?! also im on a mac!

Upload according to the naming rules of the contest with "Upload file" (button is below the commercials to the left). --aurora glacialis 14:26, 17 April 2006 (PDT)

I added a RTFM section, so that should cover most situations. The computer or the os shouldn't matter much, but on macs one needs to remember that the filetype is usually set in a special info header on the file itself, so the only thing you need to remember is to add the file extension manually if your image editing software doesn't do it for you. Here it's either ".gif" or ".png" depending on which you're using. --skks 16:00, 17 April 2006 (PDT)

Read The Fine Manual -section

Upload your logo suggestion through Special:Upload according to the contest rules.

Paste this at the end of the article, with correct info edited in (the parts in CAPS), and you should be set. Remember to preview and check if everything's alright before you save.

Clean up

Shall we create a page two when submissions hit 50?†††GodEmperorOfHell††† --18:52, 17 April 2006 (PDT)

Sounds reasonable, although at this point, it wouldn't hurt our future job to restrict the number of entries one person can submit. --skks 18:58, 17 April 2006 (PDT)
Good idea. Hopefully we can do it in a way that makes it easy for others to submit in the correct place. --Admin 23:00, 17 April 2006 (PDT)

lost.wikia.com

Just a note - we should take care that the Logo is not similar to the one from http://lost.wikia.com/ - not so much for copyright reasons but rather to make it noteable that our Wiki is a different one. I didn't even know until today that there is another Wiki on Lost.... --aurora glacialis 03:40, 20 April 2006 (PDT)

Hmm...their logo looks a lot like one of my first entries. IMHO, a darker color scheme is probably worth considering for this Wiki, perhaps something like Memory Alpha's look, this would help further differentiate it from Lost Wiki. Please note that I don't believe that this would rule out any of the lightly-colored logos already submitted; they could probably be adjusted to fit with a different color scheme. And conversely, the logo chosen would probably have some influence on how the colors of the Wiki interface should be schemed.

I don't think we will have a problem considering their logo is just text skewed like ABC does the Lost title.
Jabberwock talk contribs email - 19:54, 20 April 2006 (PDT)
I wouldn't think so either, but yet since Aurora posted his suggestion, there have been 4 more entries in the "plain, skewed text" vein... Smeagol 18:27, 27 April 2006 (PDT)

As an additional note, there's also TheLostWiki.com, although their "logo" is less likely to be duplicated.—Leflyman 23:18, 26 April 2006 (PDT)

Difficult Choices Ahead

Just a general comment that some really amazing logos have been submitted. This will be a very tough descision for the LostPedia community! --Admin 20:16, 21 April 2006 (PDT)

I wanted to add just as a general user of the site, I *love* what's been submited so far. For what it's worth, my personal fav's are 6, 30, 50, 55, 64, 68, 76. Not that we are voting or anything, but I just had to point those out, they're amazing!

There are definitely many great logos out there, but I just wanted to say: "What if the DHARMA symbol and the hatch become completely insignificant in future seasons, sort of like the caves, and Lostpedia has selected a logo that uses something that references one of them? Would there be a "Lostpedia Logo Contest III"?

Possibly! --Admin 01:49, 26 April 2006 (PDT)
Personally, I think it's doubtful that DHARMA would go away any time too soon, but that doesn't mean we can't change the logo in the future. The method of choosing one would probably be similar to this one. --skks 03:03, 26 April 2006 (PDT)
