The Black Rock was a ship that had crashed onto the island around approximately 1881. It was found peculiarly in the middle of the jungle in the “Dark Territory”, with no sign or indication of how it arrived there. According to "The Lost Experience", it was commanded by Magnus Hanso.
Once inside, Locke guessed that the ship must have been en route to a mining colony, and speculated that the ship may have left from the Eastern Coast of Africa, specifically Mozambique. Inside, Locke, Kate and Jack discovered the shackled skeletons and several crates of dynamite.
While handling a stick of dynamite outside the ship, Dr. Arzt was blown to pieces. Somewhere close to the Black Rock, there is apparently a radio tower which was previously transmitting “the Numbers” and now transmits Rousseau's French distress signal.
In "The Constant", we see a scene at an auction, displaying a painting of a ship at sea (presumed to be the Black Rock), and a glass case containing an aged-looking book. The auctioneer proclaims the following:
"The Black Rock set sail from Portsmouth, England, March 22nd 1845, on a trading mission to the kingdom of Siam, when she was tragically lost at sea. The only known artifact of this journey is the journal of the ship's first mate, which was discovered among the artifacts of pirates in Madagascar seven years later. The contents of this journal have never been made public, nor are known to anyone outside the family of the seller, Tovard Hanso."
In "The Incident", we see a ship at full sail which matches the visual characteristics of the wrecked Black Rock approaching the island. Given the stated difficulty in locating the island, it can be assumed that this ship is the Black Rock arriving to its doomed fate.
In "Ab Aeterno", Richard Alpert is sold into slavery on board the Black Rock to escape hanging in 1867. The ship is caught in a massive tidal wave which throws it through the statue of Taweret and into the heart of the island, where it is subsequently attacked by the Smoke Monster. In "Everybody Loves Hugo" The Black Rock is completely destroyed by Hurley, who detonates the dynamite inside, in an attempt to prevent Richard from using it to destroy the Ajira Airlines plane.
