[edit] Summary
The Black Rock was a ship that had crashed onto the island around approximately 1881. It was found peculiarly in the middle of the jungle in the “Dark Territory”, with no sign or indication of how it arrived there. According to "The Lost Experience", it was commanded by Magnus Hanso.
[edit] Exodus
Jack, Kate, Locke, Hurley, and Arzt were led to the Black Rock by Rousseau as they needed dynamite to blow open "the Hatch" to escape the looming threat of "The Others".
Once inside, Locke guessed that the ship must have been en route to a mining colony, and suggested that the ship may have left from the Eastern Coast of Africa, specifically Mozambique. Inside, Locke, Kate and Jack discovered the bodies of slaves and several crates of dynamite.
While handling the dynamite on the outside, Dr. Arzt died after mishandling some of it. Somewhere close to the Black Rock, there is apparently a radio tower which was previously transmitting “the Numbers” and now transmits Rousseau's French distress signal.
[edit] History
In The Constant, we see a scene at an auction, displaying a painting of a ship at sea (presumed to be the Black Rock), and a glass case containing an aged-looking book. The auctioneer proclaims the following:
"The Black Rock set sail from Portsmouth, England, March 22nd 1845, on a trading mission to the kingdom of Siam, when she was tragically lost at sea. The only known artifact of this journey is the journal of the ship's first mate, which was discovered among the artifacts of pirates in Madagascar seven years later. The contents of this journal have never been made public, nor are known to anyone outside the family of the seller, Tovard Hanso."
The auctioneer continues by opening the bidding on lot 2342 (see The Numbers) at 150,000 pounds. It is finally sold to Charles Widmore for 380,000 pounds.
