Tahiti is the largest and most populated island in French Polynesia. The capital is Papeete which is located on the northwest coast. The coordinates of Tahiti are 17°40′S 149°30′W. The island is covered in lush rainforest. Tahiti depends on tourism for much of its national economy.

Tahiti also hosts a French university, the Université de la Polynésie Française ("University of French Polynesia").
