According to the deleted Claire flashback (Season 1, DVD 7), Bernard may be the father of the Pilot of flight 815. If so he is a computer programmer, who sold his company for 39 million dollars

wouldn't he be in first class though?

Henry Gale claims to have sold his company (although it was a mining company, not a computer company). Connection? Anyway that seems to have been a dead end since we now know Bernard was a dentist. Maybe it is a different Bernard some names keep coming up in the Show like Helen. aoar like Jacks alias was Tom and the name of Claires boyfriend. Also Sam, Sarah and Brian should I go on beacsuse I ran out of names Addude

Numbers... NOT![]

Is there a strange lack of 'the numbers' in Rose and Bernard's back story? I noted that he paid $10,000 for the treatment.. which would usually have been an ideal opening for the numbers to be used for the monetary amount (as has happened with several others back stories).

Proposed after 5 months (4 or 8 would have suited the numbers).

Rose's number plate has the digits 1925.. again.. not the numbers

Maybe I'm reading waaaaaay too much into this but it just kinda struck me. --MRNasher

Mabye it was done to see peoples reactions to the lack of number references - Dee4leeds 02:48, 23 August 2006 (PDT)

He is the leader of Others and a definite Dharma recruiter[]

If i'm in the a plane crapper while there's considerable turbulence, I'd make sure to get out and strap myself into the nearest seat I can find. Even Charlie with his heroin buzz got out of the toilet pretty quick. This also was atleast his second plane trip with a ring on, he could have learned the swelling part from the first one. --skks 00:21, 28 April 2006 (PDT)

Bernard did strap himself into a seat. Goodwin and Ana-Lucia found him buckled into a seat while on top of a tree immediately after the plane crashed.

Things that do not add up[]

  • He is a dentist with bad teeth and a sweet tooth.
As we say in France, "Le cordonnier est toujours le plus mal chaussé" :) I guess the writers felt it was ironic to have a dentist with bad teeth. Xibe 06:31, 28 April 2006 (PDT)
Well, it's the same thing as the only two hairdressers in town: Do you go to the one with the nice hair, or the one with the crooked hair? The crooked-haired one, becsuse they cut eachothers' hair. --Aero Zeppelin 16:45, 1 July 2006 (PDT)
  • He says he has been a bachelor for 56 years and yet somehow knows to take his ring off when he flies on his honeymoon because his fingers swell up.
Remember it is Rose and Bernard's flight back from Australia, they already flew to Australia at least once. Xibe 06:31, 28 April 2006 (PDT)
  • Was in the back of the plane supposedly to use the restroom. Somehow, after the crash he is found hanging in a tree strapped into a seat.
Charlie was also in the front section lavatory moments before the crash. When the turbulance got bad, he got out and reach for the nearest seat. Bernard might have done just that. Now to explain why Charlie didn't die with the rest of the front-section... Xibe 06:31, 28 April 2006 (PDT)

Charlie ending up in the fuselage was a minor error and just 'happened' accoring to the writers of the show. They say there's nothing to worry about since the had to make charlie end up with the rest of the fuselalge survivors.

A Bernard timeline[]

Just trying to set out some numbers here.

  • Meets Rose when her car is stuck in the snow -- Winter, maybe as early as November or as late as March.
  • Five months later proposes to Rose. Rose tells him she only has a year to live.
  • September 2004 Bernard & Rose fly to Australia. This is close enough to their marriage that she considers it a "honeymoon". They return to the US 22 September 2004.

My guess is that they met at some point from November 2003 to March 2004; it could not have been before September 2003 due to Rose's illness. When Bernard proposed after a five-month courtship, it happened some time from April 2004 to August 2004; my feeling is that both the meeting & the proposal more likely happened later than earlier (e.g., met February 2004, he proposed July 2004). That leaves a wedding date some time in August 2004. (What a place to spend your honeymoon: Craphole Island!)

If this is correct, then Bernard was born 1947/1948. -- Llywrch 14:08, 13 June 2006 (PDT)

  • We can adjust better his age: he is 56 or 57 years old. In "SOS" he says (not with these words) that he has been single for 56 years (so, he was 56 years at moment) and during their honeymoon return they crashed on the island, so he is 57 if his birthday is between the scene of the restaurant and the actual day on the island or 56 in the other case. --Kangram 06:03, 3 October 2006 (PDT)

Speculation[]

  • May have been a war veteran. Possible evidence is the Others never made an attempt to take him, since they take "good people". If Bernard was in a war, it can be presumed that he killed people, thus taking his "good" status.
    • Though Goodwin, an Other, seemed perfectly willing to kill Nathan when he could have realistically just let him run off to the beach.
    • And yet they tried to take Mr Eko, whom we know has killed, and who used to be a drug dealer. They want Kate, who has killed and robbed banks, and Sawyer who has killed and made a career out of theft. I don't think that the Other's definition of "good people" is quite that simplistic. --Wintermute 09:56, 22 August 2006 (PDT)
      • The Others only wanted Kate and Sawyer to use as leverage to make Jack operate on Ben's tumor. The Others only wanted Jack for this sole purpose too. None of these three were "good people" or on Jacob's list. Maybe the Others tried to take Mr. Eko because he is simply a force to be reckoned with and they wanted him out of the way.
    • Bernard, if he served in the military, was doing his duty, or perhaps served as a medic or dentist rather than a combatant. He just might have had a natural aptitude for sharpshooting during basic training, and was drafted into the events on the Island.
  • Bernard is not a dentist
  • Bernard has also some identical likeness with Alvar Hanso
  • ....no he doesn't!!?
  • Possible connection between Bernard and the Pilot. In a deleted scene on Season 1 DVD the Pilot tells Claire a story of his mother breaking up with a man named Bernard who later went on to sell his computer company for millions of dollars. He is a dentist but maybe in the past he worked in computers.

Last Name[]

The "Lost Magazine - Issue 7" reveals Rose and Bernard's surname to be Nadler.—The preceding unsigned comment was added by Obi-Dan Kenobi (talkcontribs) .

According to the Through the Looking Glass episode on 1/30/08 with pop-up information, Bernard has the same last name as the Dr. that operated on Mrs. Arlen, Naidler. Should we consider changing his last name as it does fit better phonetically.--Hurley's Dad 13:55, 31 January 2008 (PST)

Home[]

It says he comes from Northern USA in the infobox, but wouldn't he be from the Bronx like Rose? --Blueeagleislander 17:17, 24 January 2007 (PST)

Missing?[]

Where has he been this season?

•The actor has been busy doing other work- I seem to recall Damon and Carlton saying that in a podcast?--RichardAM 11:43, 19 April 2007 (PDT)

  • Sawyer mentioned Bernard in Catch-22. So he's still around; we just haven't seen him. Corvus 16:52, 19 April 2007 (PDT)
    • Yeah, I heard Sawyer say that too. I thought maybe I heard it wrong. Glad to know he 'aint dead! Mia 19:37, 25 April 2007 (PDT)

Phil Collins fan?[]

Sawyer mentioned to Kate he "borrowed" a Phil Collins tape from Bernard, but this doesn't automatically mean that Bern is a fan. Like Sawyer he may have just been keeping the tape believing it was some sort of island currency. Currently there is nothing to suggest he is a fan.--RichardAM 11:47, 19 April 2007 (PDT)

From Buffalo?[]

Hello! I was just curious to know, how do we learn that Bernard is from Buffalo, New York? I have to admit, I'm mainly curious because I am from Buffalo myself! SpartanTom 16:59, May 30, 2010 (UTC)

Voice[]

Actually Bernard was also in all the 6 seasons, because his voice was heard in Deus Ex Machina. Should he being in this category too?--Station7 11:56, March 15, 2011 (UTC)
