Sullivan was a survivor of Oceanic Flight 815. Sullivan developed a rash on the island, Jack diagnosed it as hives, to which Sullivan became very frightened fearing it was a tropical disease. Jack told him to it's brought on by heat and stress, and that he should relax. Sullivan’s rash worsened, most likely because he did not relax and continued to worry about it, because of this, Sullivan was suspected by Jack of being a hypochondriac.

Sullivan discovered that Jack, Michael, Charlie and Hurley had left the camp to play golf, and inquired if he can play as well. When other people from the camp began to visit the game, they soon began to bet, and Sullivan bet his dinner that Jack would make the putt, a bet which he won.
