Talbot comes from a wealthy New England family with a history in diamond trading. The Talbot family uses their wealth in such a way that they can maintain a level of reclusion. The family arrived in New England in 1908 from the English county of Somerset.
When the chart plotter aboard the Christiane I was damaged, Ockham informed Talbot that the expedition would need to be delayed. Talbot disagrees stating that it is unacceptable as his employer's requests were made clear. When Sam Thomas successfully repairs in the chart plotter, Ockham grants him a spot on the ship. Talbot probes Sam for information on his interest in the Sunda Trench, suggesting the possibility that he is running away from something. Ockham reminds Talbot that it would be wise to allow Sam to remain on board as their destination may be hazardous to their electrical equipment. Talbot agrees to allow Sam on board, but states that he will be installing security measures.
