Matthew Abaddon was an agent of Charles Widmore. His "mission" is to bring people to the place where they should be.

Matthew visits Locke as he is recovering from his spinal injury, and implants the idea of going on a walkabout in his mind, which ultimately puts Locke on Oceanic 815. (Cabin Fever)

Matthew Abaddon recruited Naomi Dorrit to lead a group of four people, Daniel Faraday, Charlotte Lewis, Miles Straume, and Frank Lapidus, on a mission to the island. Naomi is wary, convinced that the group is not suited for the job and is concerned what to do if she encounters crash survivors. Abaddon tells her there are no survivors and to just do as she is told. (Confirmed Dead)

Matthew visits Hurley at the Santa Rosa Mental Health Institute and claims to be a lawyer working for Oceanic Airlines, and states that they feel terrible about what has happened to him and offer to upgrade him to a better hospital. As Hurley requests a business card, Abaddon shifts the conversation, and asks Hurley "Are they still alive?" Hurley suddenly becomes very worried, and calls for orderlies to help him. (The Beginning of the End)

In the episode The Life and Death of Jeremy Bentham Abbadon is introduced to Locke by Charles Widmore. Widmore appoints him Locke's personal driver. He accompanies him throughout his journey as Locke tries to convince the Oceanic Six to return to the The Island. During this journey, he tells Locke that his job is to help people get to where they need to be.

As he sets Locke's wheelchair in the trunk of the car in the middle of the graveyard where Helen is buried, Abbadon gets shot three times by a supposedly hidden Ben. He is presumed dead because Locke abandons him as he tries to escape.
