The Island where Oceanic Airlines Flight 815 crashed might be, or have been part of a lost mythical continent.

Lemuria is a 19th century supposition to account for discontinuities in biogeography that were emerging in the fossil record. Lemurs are only observed in Madagascar, but their fossils were turning up as far flung as Pakistan and China. To account for this distribution Philip Sclater, an eminent zoologist, proposed that a continent that had previously connected the land masses had sunk into the sea.

Lemuria is also sometimes referred to as Mu, or the Motherland (of Mu), Pacifica, and what Edgar Cayce called Zu or Oz. Myth has it, at its peak of civilization, Lemuria was thought to be the homeland of a telepathic race of people with fully developed psychic abilities.

The Lemuria theory disappeared completely from practical consideration, after the theory of plate tectonics and continental drift were accepted by the larger scientific community.

Theories

  • The island in Lost was part of an undiscovered continent.
    • Henry Gale said that no one would find the island.
    • Something was preventing Desmond from leaving.
    • It only became visible to the polar guys when the EMP went off.
  • Hold the ALT key in notepad/wordpad (font type must be "System" or other unicode compatible font) and type the numbers: 4 8 15 16 23 42. Release ALT, and you will get the Greek letter µ (Mu).
  • The island looks to be habited for hundreds or even thousands of years. First we see the "Black Rock", then in the season 2 finale, we see a foot of a giant statue (with four toes). It could therefore be a remnant of an ancient civilization.
    • Stone monuments of mysterious origin dot the entire Pacific, from Japan's underwater site at Yonaguni, to cryptic Petroglyphs on Hawaii's Big Island, to Easter Island among sacred and megalithic sites.
    • Walt might have powers (telepathy, astral travel) often associated with members of legendary races:
      • When Ms. Klugh is questioning Michael, she asks him, "You say he was half-way around the world, but... did you see him?" She could be hinting that Walt can project his image across great distances (something akin to astral projection). This could mean that the Others know that Walt appeared to Shannon and Sayid.
      • Walt has been forced to take some sort of tests for the Others.
      • Walts thought to be telepathic powers could in fact be premature to their full power, so with the aid of Dharmas telepathic mind Control capabillities, they are seeking Walt out to be the heir of their Machines used to manipulate peoples thoughts (Like Jack seeing his father, Kate seeing the black horse, etc...)
    • The island has healing powers, which explains the healing of Locke (paralysis) and Rose (cancer), both believe the Island can heal afflictions.
    • According to thehansofoundation.org, Joop is the world's oldest orangutan. This is a major breakthrough that is the result of The Hanso Foundation's Life Extension Project.
  • Edgar Cayce (March 18, 1877 – January 3, 1945) was an author who claimed his psychic readings affirmed the existence of Atlantis and Lemuria. He wrote that survivors of Atlantis and Lemuria had concealed beneath it a "Hall of Records" containing all the wisdom of their lost civilization and the true history of the human race. Cayce claimed to have prophesied this Hall of Records would be rediscovered and re-opened.
    • Cayce called Lemuria, Zu or Oz so the The Wizard of Oz references may also point to Lemuria.
    • The five main theme's of Cayce's work are closely related to the events on island: (1) Health-Related Information; (2) Philosophy and Reincarnation; (3) Dreams and Dream Interpretation; (4) ESP and Psychic Phenomena; and (5) Spiritual Growth, Meditation, and Prayer.
    • In addition one of his main themes was his believe in The Duality of Man - According to Cayce, Atlantean and Lemurian society was divided into two long-lived political factions - a "good" faction called the "Sons of the Law of One," and an "evil" faction called the "Sons of Belial."
      • Henry Gale claims John Locke is "one of the good ones." This might imply there is a "good" and a "bad" faction on the island.
  • The Island may speak through dreams. There is a relation with Eko's dream, Locke's Dream, Claire's dream and Charlie's dream.
    • Edgar Cayce stated: "God may speak to us through dreams. Dreams may be taken as warnings, as advice, as conditions to be met, conditions to be viewed in a way and manner as lessons, as truths, as they are presented."
