Logo Contest

Thanks for putting my logo in the contest ;-) --aurora glacialis 14:22, 15 April 2006 (PDT)

I didn't put it in myself earlier because I just today got the last episode downloaded and I usually don't want to visit lostpedia when a new episode is due since I want to see it without already knowing every detail ;-) --aurora glacialis 14:33, 15 April 2006 (PDT)

My additions and your deletions

Dude. What the hell? It's obvious that none of those pages are "canonical"... why did you go and delete my entries? I just found those sites today, and just found this wiki today and thought I'd add the info, since it wasn't on here already and might be useful to someone. What would you suggest I do instead??? -- BC 17:54, 26 April 2006 (PDT)

wasting time

Stop wasting time pissing around with moving that page back and forth. If you have a complaint about its content, then voice it. On the other hand, if this is all just a power trip, control freak thing, then at least admit it. After two days, 4 admins as well as the Admin have all been aware of the page and not yet voiced any reservations. In fact, several pages have already been moved by you guys in a way that supports what I put down. -- Lostpedian 07:36, 21 April 2006 (PDT)

Or maybe it's more that no one really cares what you want to say when you constantly attack everyone who doesn't agree with you. --skks 07:42, 21 April 2006 (PDT)
Skks, that's the problem... as far as I can see, no one disagrees with what I put in the Manual of Style. All I see is a clique of sysops who want to establish some sort of artificially oppressive control. -- Lostpedian 07:50, 21 April 2006 (PDT)

Look, professor, there's a very simple reason we don't have a manual of style, we haven't had a real need of one. We have done really well without one because we trust people to have common sense. Whenever they see the link is red, they either experiment or leave it for someone else to do it. And quite frankly, you're the only one picky enough to be bothered by the LOST word in the title. So we may or may not have a manual of style, well, there are other parts of the site you can work on, don't obsess with it, Cerebro. Play well with others, remember that, Grumpy Dwarf. †††GodEmperorOfHell††† --07:50, 21 April 2006 (PDT)

A lot of people have common sense... but that doesn't mean that they can spontaneously and independently come to a consensus on things like this. We're maturing as a wiki, and now it is time to make things a little more consistent. Readers and editors will appreciate it. -- Lostpedian 07:56, 21 April 2006 (PDT)

The real objection is our not wanting to have iron clad regulations, we 've been successful because of that, the way things work and have worked so far is more free and relaxed, this month we have had a plethora of new users who are just interested in hitting the edit tab without any regard for style or whatsnot, of course there are going to be vandals and spammers, but to root them out is a sysop's work, maybe New User's edits are crude and misspelled, but Veteran user will clean it, link it and categorize it, IMHO putting all kinds of regulatory styles will make new users not want to try. New users are the greatest assets we will ever have and with Sawyer as my witness I say; let them come and let them goof it up. Go and work a litle in other parts of the wiki, I beg you, leave this matter rest for a while, It's teh weekend, for JJ Abrams' sake, You Brainy Smurf. †††GodEmperorOfHell††† --08:10, 21 April 2006 (PDT)

"but Veteran user will clean it, link it and categorize it" - that's exactly what I am trying to do. As a Veteran user, I am perfectly willing to help clean up... but the problem comes when multiple Veteran users have a different idea about how pages should be named (with "Lost" or without, Upper or lowercase, etc). I've put together some guidelines, which I am willing to discuss. Unfortunately, your actions in moving/deleting/blocking are completely opposite that - you enforce your idea, which leads to conflict. -- Lostpedian 12:14, 21 April 2006 (PDT)

It had to be done. No problem. --skks 08:18, 24 April 2006 (PDT)

Is this going to actually be canon? I thought the title "alternate reality game" meant that it was just a game and not actually part of the storyline. Is it canon and part of the TV show story or is it completely parallel? -- <<Novajoe23>> 16:41, 3 May 2006 (PDT)

Category:Categories

Hi, GodEmperorOfHell. I created this category mimicking the category structure of Wikipedia. You say that Special:Categories does the same job, but that's not entirely true: this is a list of all categories, where my category was meant to be a list of all root categories, the ones that don't have a parent category. I believe that this category would be very useful as a starting point, apart from the Main Page.

I hope this clarifies my work. Riki 08:37, 15 May 2006 (PDT)

Theories

What is general practice on Lostpedia with theories that are incorrect/correct? For example, on Michael's page it reads:

  • Probably was not being held by The Others, as implied by Zeke's comment in The Hunting Party: "Don't worry about Michael. He's not gonna find us."
    • Michael claimed that he found the hiding place of The Others. So Zeke was either wrong, or lied. They may have captured Michael, that would explain why his trail went cold at that spot, also meaning that Zeke meant Michael wouldn't find them unless they wanted him to (It's worth noting that Zeke may have had reasons for lying to Jack, or may simply have been "us" to refer to the assembled parties at that particular location - "not gonna find us" may simply have meant "won't interrupt this meeting.)

The first part is obviously false, but the sub-section is dead on. Would it be best to delete the first part and leave the second or would you just take both out because one is false and one is "proven", thus no longer a theory?--Isotope23 07:37, 18 May 2006 (PDT)

Cool, that's what I figured... just wanted to make sure that wasn't against any guidelines, etc.--Isotope23 08:24, 18 May 2006 (PDT)

Skate, Hurlibby?

Hi. :) Not exactly fanfic code, but fan abbreviations for couplings. Sawyer + Kate = Skate. Jack + Kate = Jate. For the shippers of the world, it's a convenient shorthand for discussing a twosome. You can also see the constructions with real-world couples: Brangelina = Brad Pitt + Angelina Jolie. Another Lost example would be "Did you see the Sayana chemistry last night when they were on the hike for the balloon?" Sayana = Sayid + Ana-Lucia. It goes on and on and on and on, which is why I tried to restrict the pairings page to just canon couples. :) Jengod 15:12, 18 May 2006 (PDT)

Sysop Template draft

I'm really just a beginner at this, but here is an example:

  • Template:user sysopdraft (comments in article talk)
Contrib¯ _Santa_ ¯ Talk 17:30, 21 May 2006 (PDT)
  • Yeah, I just mainly meant the draft template as a starting point. For example I don't know if my reasons for the width (see article talk) are valid, and the polar bear was honestly a random dummy icon-- I have a giant white bear stuffed animal, so I took a photo of it this morning and slapped it in there, but of course any icon will work. I somewhat arbitrarily chose a 50x50 PNG with transparent edges, and the polar bear is even more arbitary (although I admit it turned out cute & relevant). So feel free to change the image/color/sizing/coding. BTW where do these discussions (about suggestions or future ideas) take place, is there a private community portal? I was thinking a community portal of some sort might be nice as Lostpedia seems to be growing quite nicely. Contrib¯ _Santa_ ¯ Talk 00:23, 22 May 2006 (PDT)
  • Speaking of the fanon template, (and the Non-Canon template) is there any need in your opinion for a template for articles that are devoted to content that does not appear in a television episode? I'm mainly referring to The Lost Experience but also to Bad Twin and the official novelization as well. Even if it's technically canon, there may be inconsistencies (think officially-sanctioned Star Wars/Star Trek novels), so perhaps it would be a good idea to explicitly flag non-television-episode content in Lostpedia. Contrib¯ _Santa_ ¯ Talk 04:59, 22 May 2006 (PDT)

On OOG websites

GoH... as far as references to sites like Paik-Heavy and the "Mythic Hunger Quest".. this is a fan-site that is trying to push itself into the Lost Experience game. Would we include every update on every fan-created site just because they threw in some mysterious questions? Should definitely be deleted... people keep posting updates to this site as if it were in-game, and all it does is add a lot of noise and confusion--Bernini 11:15, 22 May 2006 (PDT)

I understand your point. HOWEVER, what I am concerned about is constant updates to the fake site being recorded here as if they were part of the game. Whereas the fake orientation films are relatively static content, and to some extent entertaining, keeping track of the puzzle by puzzle developments of the paik-heavy and fake thompson blog seems to be a bit over the top and unnecessary. Also, since the site is actually trying to collect email addresses for unknown purposes, the less detailed attention they get the better.--Bernini 11:25, 22 May 2006 (PDT)

As far as Charlie/Hurley sites go... *shudder* but, perhaps then we (I can do it or defer to you, your call) should point the poster to the bigspaceship1 site page and ask him to use that as a template (eg. have a paik-heavy page with links to updates). I just don't want the BS permeating through valid pages--Bernini 11:42, 22 May 2006 (PDT)

Deleting relevant material - Star Trek XI and M:I-3

I swear if I have to restore this article one more time because GodEmperorofHell doesn't think half of the Lost creative team working on this and leaving Lost to do it isn't relevant, I'm gonna get medieval. This isn't an autocratic regime you know GodEmperor. Don't go wiping out another sysop's work. --Plkrtn 05:13, 24 May 2006 (PDT)

personally, i think if something directly references LOST in some way it deserves an article. MI:III does (in the end credits); Star Trek doesn't (at least that we know of, so far). --kaini. 10:25, 24 May 2006 (PDT)
Its my belief that if it directly impacts LOST, which both do, then why shouldn't it get an article? We should cover everything that J.J Abrams and Damon Lindelof are involved in, as creator, director etc... Even if its only a cover article that links to more relevant locations, it will drive people into the site, by being able cover anything that involves J.J. and Damon. The cast are different, as are the majority of the production team, but we should cover the creators careers as much as possible as LOST is the reason they have them! --plkrtn 12:23, 24 May 2006 (PDT)
My opinion: This isn't the Abramspedia or the Lindelofpedia, it's the Lostpedia. There should be (and is) an article for each of these people because they've created Lost, and a mention about what else they're involved with belongs on their page. If there's more to be said about either, a reference to another site is appropriate. Creating a page for each other project that these people work on expands the breadth of Lostpedia beyond what I believe was its original intent.
At the same time, I agree with you, Plkrtn, that GEoH should have discussed the deletion with you first and, if you and he disagreed, should have taken it up with other Sysops for their opinions before any pages were deleted.

Moved the conversation here... I doubt Admin wants us chatting on his talk page...

How do you watch the episodes/why does it take until Friday? XSG 18:43, 24 May 2006 (PDT) Ok, here's the deal, As an international user I don't see the episodes on TV, as local transmissions are way behind. (Monday we hadThe Hunting Party, for example). It's common practice to get the episodes some other way. (that's why you get to see Lostaways from singapore and Brazil, or Jordan, where there are no LOST broadcasts. ) and this is a double bill, nornmally I would watch it thursday noon, but it is going to take double the time to get it, friday is a safe bet. nobody said being Mexico's number one Lostaway was easy. †††GodEmperorOfHell††† --18:50, 24 May 2006 (PDT)

I live in the U.S. and have to download the episodes... I use BitTorrent and can usually manage an episode in six hours. I assume you use BitTorrent as well, but have slower bandwidth? XSG 18:56, 24 May 2006 (PDT)

I use BitTorrent too, it takes me an average of eight hours, but I work in the morning and watch it until I come back, normally download slows down at noon (don't know why) so it's a safe estimation. You are in the US, you could stream it from the ABC site, something which I can't. †††GodEmperorOfHell††† --19:01, 24 May 2006 (PDT)

the episodes are usually up on rapidshare as well on thursday, split into several parts. rapidshare is generally faster than bittorrent, the only problem being it makes you wait an hour between downloading parts. but if you have a dynamic IP, there are ways and means around this problem ;)
not that i'm condoning piracy, of course... kaini. 19:16, 24 May 2006 (PDT)

Is it really piracy if a) the content is distributed freely in the first place, b) the content is being downloaded because access to the free distribution is limited by the (lack of) signal strength of the broadcast, and c) no one is making any profit from it? XSG 19:21, 24 May 2006 (PDT)

That's the problem. If it weren't for that practice half of Lostpedia's users wouldn't be able to visit the site, the map shows mainly continental united states users, but we have many europeans, latin americans, asians zand others in our rster, I would simply say it is for the greater good. †††GodEmperorOfHell††† --19:24, 24 May 2006 (PDT)

On "Theories"

GEoH.. the more interest grows in the site thanks to the show and ARG, the more "low quality" content is likely to be added. I would like to suggest a new policy on posting "theories" to wiki pages. Basically, my suggestion is that there has to be one piece of supporting evidence associated with any theory. Theories without any supporting evidence, or incorrect/inapplicable supporting evidence should then be considered "speculation" and removed/kept to talk pages. Just a thought..--Bernini 11:59, 25 May 2006 (PDT)

I would like to add, in regards to theories, that I've noticed a *lot* of what is essentially discussion coming out under Theories. (A personal pet peeve, maybe) Someone will post some bizzaro-world idea, then someone else will refute that idea right under it, etc. etc. Think that all of this might need some policy addressment. Or, you know, not. Absalom 12:03, 25 May 2006 (PDT)

Policy

Is there a "policy" page at all? I briefly looked for one to refer users to when I made edits, but I didn't notice one. Of the four point list you put on my talk page, #1 is by far the one that I've got my crusade on against. So far, the fanon/canon articles seem to be fairly seperated, at least for now. As for #3, as a follower of the podcast, I tend to side with those who say that once the producers debunk something, we can safely dismiss it as well.

  • A little bit of irony here - I actually have more time to dedicate when the show is *not* running, since my job allows me summers off. Still, just let me know if there's anything more specific that I ought to be doing.Absalom 05:50, 26 May 2006 (PDT)

It seems to address style issues pretty well. The only comment I would make is the inclusion of a standardization of style. Templates have helped a *lot*, but the "facts", "theories", "on the island", etc. are becoming blurred and even filled with enough chaff to make the wheat hard to find. It's a bit of a sticky point, though. Who is to say what a good theory is and isn't, especially on a wiki? I expect traffic will go down during the summer reruns, so the lull might be a good time to prepare for season three, especially considering there won't be frequent reruns breaks to clean up. Absalom 07:28, 26 May 2006 (PDT)

Theory vs. Speculation - Possible Definition: First off, there will never be a clear black and white between what is a theory and what is pure speculation. What we can do, is draw up a brief definition that will serve its purpose 90% of the time, and leave the other 10% to get hammered out via the discussion page of any article.

  • A theory is a belief that has some basis in fact, or supporting evidence within the show. Each theory should be posted along with its supporting evidence. A recent valid theory would be that Kelvin=Joe Inman. Why, well, they look alike, they both have similar backgrounds, etc.
  • Speculation, on the other hand, has no basis in fact within the show's or game's canon. Speculation should be kept out of the theories page. One recent example of speculation is "the polar bears came from where the listening station is". The supporting evidence is what.. because its a cold climate? A theory with factual evidence to the contrary may also be considered speculation.

Heh.. I wrote was is there, so I'll wait for others input on the matter. As far as what's there, I agree 100% :)--Bernini 17:01, 26 May 2006 (PDT)

this page is an excellent idea. for maximum impact, it needs to be visible to anyone thinking of making an edit, at all times. maybe in the copyright template, and maybe included in a notice on the front page too?. we have no new televised material to work on over the summer (to be honest, i'm not feeling the ARG so much over the last two weeks), so forming clear lines of demarcation fnord between theory and opinion, and what we know as opposed to what we think we know (thank you mr. rumsfeld ;) ) is the first step in deciphering this big ol mess of new revalations. amazing finale btw! good lord! --kaini. 18:49, 26 May 2006 (PDT)
