Kahana was a freighter, that was sent to discover and capture the Island. The freighter was ferrying mercenaries for an extraction mission for Benjamin Linus, led by Martin Keamy, hired by Charles Widmore, who was also the owner of Kahana.
Besides Keamy and his people there was Gault, the captain, Naomi Dorrit, who was the first to be sent to the island, and Daniel Faraday, Charlotte Lewis, Miles Straume, and Frank Lapidus, who came there a bit later as a group of researchers.
During this trip Michael sabotaged the engines, causing the ship to stop. He was given a package while on board, which was a suitcase bomb loaded with C-4 explosives. Michael detonated the bomb, however, it was a mind-game designed to test his devotion to the mission.
Presumably Kahana had two helicopter landing pads, a medical center, communications room, barracks, cargo holds, engine rooms and some other compartments.
It also had a Zodiac raft, originally used by Minkowski and Brandon, however, they turned back after suffering from time-related symptoms. The raft was later used by Sayid Jarrah in order to get back to the island in order to rescue other survivors of Oceanic 815.
Several people from the island managed to get to the boat on a raft - the passengers of Oceanic 815 including Sun and Jin-Soo Kwon, as well as Aaron Littleton. Desmond Hume learnt that there was a bunch of explosives on that ship, and together with Michael they tried to prevent the possible explosion. Actually these explosives could be controlled remotely, and it was Keamy who could make the whole ship explode via a small device on his hand, that served as a switch to the bomb on a boat in case Keamy was dead.
The ship was destroyed eventually after Ben killed Keamy on the Orchid station, just after the chopper with Frank Lapidus, Jack Shephard, Sayid Jarrah, Desmond Hume, Hugo Reyes, Sun-Hwa Kwon and Kate Austen with Aaron left. The explosion caused the death of everybody onboard, presumably including Michael Dawson and Jin-Soo Kwon. It is not known whether there were any survivors.
The people on the beach of the island could also see the destruction of the ship, their only hope of returning home.
Gault is the captain of the freighter, who explains to Sayid and Desmond about why they are looking for Benjamin Linus. During a confrontation with Keamy, he is killed, after Keamy fires a bullet into his chest.
| George Minkowski
George Minkowski is the ship's communications officer on the freighter. When Jack calls the ship on day 93, Minkowski answers. He later speaks to Naomi just before she dies. Minkowski begins to suffer from consciousness time-transportation symptoms and dies from brain aneurysm.
A female crew member on the freighter who answers calls from the satellite phone after Minkowski gets stuck in a time loop. She is contacted by Miles and Daniel and helps Daniel with an experiment by sending a rocket to the island. She commits suicide by jumping off the boat into the water with a large chain around her.
Ray identifies himself as a doctor and wears a white lab coat. He is assaulted by Sayid when he objects to Desmond taking a call from Daniel Faraday in his sickbay but later shows Sayid and Desmond to their quarters about the ship. His body washes up on the beach, though Omar responds that "The doctor is fine." However in he is killed by Keamy, in the exact manner the beach described.
| Kevin Johnson
Michael appears as a deckhand aboard the Kahana, the freighter anchored near the island, under the pseudonym of Kevin Johnson. It is revealed that Michael is Ben's spy on the boat. After learning of this, Sayid, in anger, betrays Michael to the Gault, revealing him to be the saboteur.
Jeff was a mechanic aboard the Kahana. When Sayid and Desmond arrived to assist with the repairs on the engine, Michael sends Jeff to retrieve a pressure valve from the supply room, so that the three of them can discuss the situation in private.
Brandon was a crew member aboard the Kahana. Brandon and Minkowski has left the freighter on the ship's tender, in an attempt to reach to Island. The trip was short-lived when Brandon began "acting crazy" and they needed to head back.
| Naomi Dorrit
Recruited by Matthew Abaddon to lead a group of four people on a mission to the island. Naomi is the first of her team to arrive on the island, although she injures herself as she parachutes in. She is discovered by Desmond, Hurley, Charlie, and Jin, and is brought back to the survivor's camp in secret. She claims she has come from a freighter off-shore that has been sent by Penny Widmore to search for Desmond. She is mortally wounded when Locke throws a knife into her back.
| Daniel Faraday
Daniel Faraday was a member of the freighter search team, who parachuted onto the island after jumping from a helicopter at a low altitude. After landing, he was immediately met by Jack and Kate, and Faraday correctly assumed who Jack was.
| Charlotte Lewis
Charlotte Lewis previously worked as a Cultural Anthropologist, and had discovered a polar bear related to the DHARMA Initiative in the Tunisian desert. Charlotte arrived on the island as part of the freighter search team, who arrived for Benjamin Linus.
| Miles Straume
Miles Straume is a member of the freighter search team. He was recruited by Matthew Abaddon to join a team along with Daniel, Frank and Charlotte, led by Naomi, to arrive at the island in search of Benjamin Linus. Miles previously worked as a medium in Inglewood, California.

A crew member on the freighter. When Frank returns with Desmond and Sayid, he assists Keamy in escorting Desmond to the sick bay to join Minkowski, who is experiencing a similar symptom. After Ray sounds the alarm, Omar and Keamy return to see Desmond on the satellite phone with Daniel. Keamy and Omar take Frank to see the captain of the ship, and locks Desmond, Sayid and George in the room.
Mayhew was a mercenary aboard the Kahana. Mayhew accompanied Martin and Omar to the island for a raid on the Barracks to extradite Ben back to the freighter. During the attack, Mayhew was attacked by the Monster, and brought back to the freighter for medical attention. He passed away after Ray was not able to help him.
Kocol was a mercenary aboard the Kahana. Kocol accompanied Martin, Omar, Mayhew, LaCour and Redfern to the island for a raid on the Barracks to extradite Ben back to the freighter. During the attack, Mayhew was attacked by the Monster, and Kocol assisted with aiding Mayhew. Kocol was killed when Richard Alpert launched an attack on the mercenary crew, and has his neck snapped.
LaCour was a mercenary aboard the Kahana. LaCour accompanied Martin, Omar, Mayhew, Kocol and Redfern to the island for a raid on the Barracks to extradite Ben back to the freighter. During the attack, Mayhew was attacked by the Monster, and LaCour assisted with aiding Mayhew. LaCour was killed when Richard Alpert launched an attack on the mercenary crew.
Redfern was a mercenary aboard the Kahana. Redfern accompanied Martin, Omar, Mayhew, LaCour and Kocol to the island for a raid on the Barracks to extradite Ben back to the freighter. During the attack, Mayhew was attacked by the Monster, and Redfern assisted with aiding Mayhew. Redfern was killed when Richard Alpert launched an attack on the mercenary crew, after he was hit in the neck with a stun dart.
