Kahana was a freighter, that was sent to discover and capture the Island. The freighter was ferrying mercenaries for an extraction mission for Benjamin Linus, led by Martin Keamy, hired by Charles Widmore, who was also the owner of Kahana.
The freighter left the port of Fiji sometime between Days 76 and 80. All members of the various teams boarded the ship prior to it leaving the port.
Around Day 84, Captain Gault allows either Naomi Dorrit or Frank Lapidus to pilot a helicopter and inspect the island's location. Naomi eventually convinces Frank to let her scan the island and she departs that
However, around the same time Naomi crashed onto the island, which was Day 85, the ship encroached on the island some eighty nautical miles away from shorelines. Sometime shortly after this, the ship's engines were destroyed and it remained stationary.
From here, Frank flew Charlotte Lewis, Miles Straume, and Daniel Faraday of the ship's science team onto the island but eradic weather forced the passengers to parachute onto various pockets of the island, scattering. Frank managed to land the chopper safely.
Naomi is killed on the island and all members of the science team are now scattered on the island after the weather detoured the chopper. However, Frank returns to the ship with Desmond and Sayid. The same night, Martin Keamy and his mercenaries board the chopper and Frank flies them to the island for a mission, per Gault's orders.
The mercenary team returned the following night with Mayhew injured. While Mayhew was being tended to by the ship's doctor, Ray, Omar straps a dead man's trigger to Keamy which is linked to the armory's C4 stash. If Keamy dies, the device goes off and the C4 will detonate remotely. Before returning to the island to complete the mission, Keamy stages a mutiny and murders Ray and than outdraws and shoots Gault dead. The freighter is now leaderless while Keamy and his soldiers return to the island to complete the mission.
Prior to Gault's death, Sayid managed to get a Zodiac Raft from him which he began using to ferry people from the island to the freighter. Daniel Faraday took over the role of ferrying people to the freighter whilst Sayid went to find Jack and the other survivors. Meanwhile, Michael, Desmond, and Jin locate the C4 stocked in the armory and attempt to disarm the battery source.
After Keamy is murdered by Ben in the Orchid on the Island, the ship C4 detonates and destroys the freighter in a matter of minutes. Moments before the C4 went off, Desmond ordered everyone to get off, with Jack, Kate, Sun, Sayid, Frank, and Desmond being the only people who would escape the freighter before its demise. Michael and any Kahana crew members were killed in the explosion but Jin narrowly survived.
The ship's destruction could be seen from the island, in the form of large debris and heavy smoke. Sawyer and Juliet both looked on uneasy at the wreckage in the ocean.
