Ian Somerhalder was born on December 8, 1978 in Covington, Louisiana. Growing up, Ian spent much of his time swimming, fishing, and training horses, as well as performing in his school drama club and with the local theater group. At the age of 10, Ian began modeling for designers such as Calvin Klein, Dolce & Gabanna, Gucci, and Guess. At the age of 17, Ian committed to acting, and began studying the craft in New York. Ian's first role was as an extra in the film Black & White. During the filming, a talent manager spotted Ian in a crowd of 400 and signed him for representation.

Somerhalder was a part of the main cast during the entire Season 1. In Season 2 he appeared as "Special Guest Star" in Abandoned and he was also uncredited in The Other 48 Days, where his voice was heard. For Season 3 he returned once again as "Special Guest Star" in Further Instructions and Exposé.
