While returning home to Los Angeles, on an Oceanic Airlines flight, Jack Shephard is handed a newspaper by a flight attendant, which contains a newspaper article pertaining to the death of an unknown man.
Jack visits the Hoffs/Drawlar Funeral Parlor, which was where a viewing was held for the individual. Jack was the first, and only guest to attend the viewing. When the funeral director inquired as to whether Jack was family or friend, he replied by saying "neither".
