Libby as a patient at the Santa Rosa Mental Health Institute

Before the crash

  • Was in the tail section of the airplane
  • Claims to be a Clinical Psychologist (she told this to Sawyer and Ana-Lucia)
  • Claims to have dropped out of medical school after one year
  • Claims to have been injured while racing "a cute Ski patrol guy" in Stowe, VT
  • Was a patient in Santa Rosa Mental Institute the same time as Hurley
  • Had a much darker hair color than on the island.

On the island

  • Performed triage on Tailenders after the crash
  • Lived with the Tailenders in the Arrow station
  • Lies to Sawyer about how bad his wound is to motivate him to keep going
  • Seems to babble a lot, but this may be the result of stress or the clever use of her psychological training
  • Flirted with Hurley in The Swan bunker's laundry room in an effort to distract him from thinking about why she looks familiar to him from his time spent at Santa Rosa Mental Institute.
  • Told Hurley that he stepped on her foot while he was boarding the plane
  • Helped Claire to regain her memories of the Medical Station through what looked like hypnotic regression.
  • Helped Hurley to rid himself of his eating habit, only to see a parachute full of food appear on the island.
  • Stops Hurley from jumping off a cliff.
  • Kisses Hurley.

Theories

  • She's interested in Hurley because she knows he's rich.
  • May be a compulsive liar
  • Could be an Other, getting close to Hurley because he has the Oceanic 815 Flight Manifest.
    • Unlikely, since she was in the lunatic asylum, but may have become an Other since coming to the island.
  • Could have become obsessed with Hurley at the hospital and been following him ever since. [ending up on the flight that crashed].
  • She could be the mysterious figure watching Hurley in the doorway to the sports hall in the Dave episode.
  • She could be violent and have contributed to the death of the tailies.
  • She could be a Dharma agent sent to keep tabs on Leonard, and happened to run into Hurley.
  • She could suffer from a dissociative disorder, beeing the reason for her stay in the Mental Hospital. Could she be the writer of the Diary?
    • Unlikely that she is Janelle, the writer of the diary, seeing she was in constant contact with the other midsection survivors for the first forty-three days on the island. We also see Libby in the water swimming towards shore in the episode "The Other 48 Days", which strongly suggests that she was in the tail section of the plane when it crashed.
  • She could really could have been a clinical psychologist. People have breakdowns all the time. Maybe she saw something horrible or had something horrible done to her. Probably does have an attraction to Hurley, but may also possibly work for Dharma. We won't know until the flight manifest is checked. And then, her story may not be true. We DO KNOW that she was in Santa Rosa Mental Institute at the same time Hurley was.
  • She could also be suffering with the same condition as Hurley. She says how things happened to her on the other side of the island, which could be her imagination, just as Hurley has imagined everything so far
  • She might just have learned enough psychology as a patient to pass herself off as a psychologist.
  • This is all a hallucination but hers, not Hurley's
  • Mental patients are usually seperated by sex at institutions, so she could be a man.
    • Unlikely since there is a blonde woman on a couch in the background of the scene with Hurley playing Connect Four with Leonard.
  • The patient may be Libby's sister, suffering with the same condition as Hurley. This could be the reason why she became a psychologist, and why she got interested in Hurley and followed him.
    • This theory is doubtful however since the nurse that gave her the pills referred to her as "Libby".
  • Her full name is Libby Widmore
