During the second season of LOST it was revealed that the numbers are the code that must be entered into the computer located inside the hatch every 108 minutes. Entering the numbers resets the countdown timer to 108 minutes.

Note that the mysterious project the hatch was built for is called "The Dharma Initiative". The word "Dharma" means "moral duty", and the number 108 is very important in Buddhist mythology. To many Budddhists, there are 108 sins (or "defilements" of mankind. It is for this reason that New Year's celebrations, such as those in Japan, feature ringing a bell 108 times as well as one possible reason most Buddhist prayer beads (mala) have 108 individual beads.

  • I was just reading on the boards and I found a thread about the flags on Locke's bedside table. One is the Spanish Cross of Burgundy (something like that) which was used in the year...drumroll please...1516!!!
  • The Numbers can be made into coordinates: 4.8151 S Lat., 174(Which is 180-6).2342 W Long. These coordinates lie in the Pacific Ocean, in a direct line between Sydney and Los Angeles

8 is 8th number counting in standard reading format. 15 is 15th, 16 is 16th, 23 is 23rd and 42 is 42nd. If only the 4 was a 1 or 7 this would work with all the numbers.

Facts

count up from the bottom and last 42 (row 7) you get to 4 the alpha, starting in the same place count up 23 you get 8 repeat this for each number count up from the last 42 16 places you get 15 and so on. the numbers are random by themselves but when repeated they are the pattern, the patern is not in the numbers the numbers are the pattern.

You can also get to 4 from the bottom 42 then start at the top left number 4 and count 8 to get to 8 and from 4 count 15 and you will get 15 and so on..

Once Again the numbers are the pattern the pattern is not in the numbers

(connect 4 remember 6 down 7 across) notice the patern on the way up the sides. There is your answer 7 rows of 6 numbers is 42 and the sum of these numbers is 108.

Because this was fun, I rolled with it...

540 days is close to 1.5 years (just to give a better scope)

540 days happens to be 777600 minutes.

As stated above, 777600 / 108 = 7200 times pressed or 3600 each crew member (supposed to be 2 crew members per 540 day shift)

Interestingly there are 3600 seconds in an hour (just saying).

4 8 15 and 16 all divide evenly into 7200, but 23 and 42 do not. However 32 and 24 do, which respectfully are 23 and 42 transposed.

More fun. Keep in mind the Dharma symbols are similar to Bagua. Well they are easily broken back down to binary numbers, technically octal since there are 8 bagua symbols (the yin/yang lines around the outside). Find more info here: http://www.circle-of-light.com/fengshui/bagua.html

So that got me thinking...

Decimal: 4 8 15 16 23 42 = 108
Octal: 04, 10, 17, 20, 27, 52 = 154
Hex: 4, 8, F, 10, 17, 2A = 6C
Binary, 100, 1000, 1111, 10000, 10111, 101010 = 1101100

Of course, we're not 100% sure the numbers are decimal, except for one key factor, that their sum in decimal is 108. If it weren't I'd say they had another base.

In another JJ Abrams Show, Alias, Season 3, Episode 6, there is a section where Sidney and Will are looking up safety deposit boxes with things stored in them. The last 2 numbers on the list are box 023 and 042, and above that there is both 015 and 008 listed as boxes. I am not sure if this is direct coinsidence or not, as this episode was made before lost, however there are other apperences of 42 and 23 in this episode. Also notible is the fact that all Alias episodes revloved around a number (47) just as lost episodes do (4 8 15 16 23 442).

Ideas
