Mokuleia Beach

Location

Mokuleia Beach is practically the end of the line for the Farrington Highway on Oahu's North Shore. You will find it located directly across from Dillingham Airfield. If you have seen Pilot Part 1 enough, it should NOT be that hard to recognise, with the mountains in the background and all.

The Location and Lost

Mokuleia was the site of the original plane crash in Pilot Part 1. The beach was used for several episodes after that until the camp moved farther down the beach due to the threat of high tides and ever encroaching waters on the Fuselage. At least, that was the reason they gave on the show. In truth, that is the actual reason why the Show left Mokuleia. During the winter months (which they were nearing at the time they moved), the tides around Mokuleia and the Nortth shore are huge. The cast and crew were forced to relocate to the new beach site at Haleiwa for fear that the set would be swept into the ocean, in turn causing a major upset for the show and a bona fide mini natural disater. If they hadn't moved, and the set HAD been swept away...well...let's just say ABC would be screwed and we wouldn't have anymore Lost.

This part is pretty much the end of the road, as the beach extends down to Kaena Point. Once the asphalt ends, you'd better have four wheel drive, or else you'll get stuck. During the Pilot Episodes and until they left Mokuleia, the set was kept there 24/7, of course, with the road covered in beach sand to extend the set back as far as possible. Due to the highway being public, if they are filming they would stop the cars between takes, because they can't not allow people to go through. Therefore, (if you were stopped) you could get a chance to to sit and watch them film for a few minutes. That's what they did during the Pilot. They covered the road with sand, and just held up cars. Once they let the cars go, they could just wind their way through the set and keep on going. (I wonder how many people came back multiple times...)

Many times the Police would get calls from panicking citizens about how there had "been a terrible plane crash at Mokuleia." Finally, after dozens of these alleged "plane crash sightings" were reported, a sign was erected to indicate that the Crash WAS in fact just a television set.

The Fuselage (Nose Section)

Location

Easily visible from the Kamehameha Highway is the front section of the airplane used in the Pilot Episode. Yes, this is the one that the pilot gets ripped out of. It is located in a "compound" that is occasionally locked down, but if it isn't...just drive right in and you can take a picture of yourself standing right in front of the plane. That is what happened to nsmith12916 of Lost-forum.com

The Lost Airplane #1

The picture you see off to the side is the only known picture of the Fuselage circulating around the Internet. You can see the plane in the backgorund with the Oceanic Logo partially covered by half-shredded tarps. The compound is located approximately 2 to 5 minutes south (by car) of Heeia State Park/Heeia Pier on the Kamehameha Highway.
