The following presumes a general understanding of the concept of Six Degrees of Separation. If you don't, you should study up, as its an important theme in the show.

In general its important to note that slowly but surely we're finding that some, if not all of the characters have One or Two Degrees of Separation between them. The likelihood of this occurring between passengers on a jetliner are fairly astronomical. So its something worth keeping an eye out for in the show, as the shortness of the separation between the characters is likely a large part of the puzzle/mystery of the show.

CONNECTIONS

  • Jack met Ana-Lucia in the airport lounge before they boarded the plane
    • Zero Degrees of Separation between Jack and Ana-Lucia, but they met just before the flight, so doesn't really count

  • Boone and Sawyer were in a Sydney police station at the same time in first season's Episode 13 - "Hearts and Minds"
    • One or Two Degrees of Separation between Boone and Sawyer, they weren't talking with the same detective so it depends on if you count the police station as One degree or the fact that the detectives likely knew each other since they worked together as Two
    • Boone is trying to convince the Australian police to check on his sister, Shannon, because her live-in boyfriend is abusing her
    • Sawyer is being escorted through the station in handcuffs. We find out later in Episode 23, "Exodus: Part 1" he was arrested after a fight in a bar and deported due to his long criminal record.

  • Shannon was asked by Sayid to watch his bags in the airport for a moment
    • Zero Degrees of Separation between Shannon and Sayid, however again they only met before boarding, and not prior so again this doesn't count
    • Shannon told Sayid, "Sure, whatever."
    • Shannon then told airport security that an "Arab man" left the bags there to prove to Boone that she was capable of doing anything she wanted
    • This is probably why Sayid was pulled out of line in front of Sawyer causing Sawyer to not trust Sayid.
    • In a deleted flashback that is on the Season 1 Disc 7 DVD, we find that Sayid, as a result of Shannon's actions was taken for questioning by airport security while buying a necktie for his reunion with Nadia. This is the same necktie that Sawyer later uses to secure the radar dish on the second raft.

  • In Season 2, Episode 1 - "Man of Science, Man of Faith" Jack is running up and down the steps in a stadium when he becomes aware of another man running up the steps. Jack trips and injures his ankle. The other man is Desmond, who tells Jack he is training for a race around the world. Upon departing, Desmond says, "Well, good luck, brother. See you in another life, yeah?"
    • Zero Degrees of Separation between Jack and Desmond (this one counts)

  • The daughter of the man Jin is supposed to assasinate and the original owner of Sun's pug when Jin goes to his house is seen watching a news piece on TV of Hurley when his lottery win becomes public.
    • Coincidence. It doesn't count as any Degrees, unless the girl actually knew Hurley

  • Hurley presumably owns the box company Locke works at, as stated by his business manager.
    • Alone this doesn't constitute any Degrees of Separation, however...

  • In Season 1, Episode 25 - "Exodus: Part 3" Hurley and Charlie were staying in the same hotel the night before their plane is to take off from Sydney.
    • They didn't really meet so this doesn't count as any Degrees
    • Hurley wakes up late (his alarm clock had fried in his sleep). Rushing to catch his plane, he stops the hotel elevator, but it is too full and he decides to take the stairs, prompting Charlie to yell at him, "Some of us have a bloody flight to make!"
    • Michael and Walt were also staying there. They have Vincent with them.

  • In "What Kate Did", in the Army Recruitment Office where Kate's father worked, you can see Sayid on the television in the background
    • This is not worth any Degrees

  • In "One of Them", we see (in a flashback) Sayid enountering Army officer Sam Austen, Kate's thought-to-be biological father. Sam Austen even carries a picture of her with him.
    • This would count as one degree
    • It is also especially noteworthy because, as previously mentioned, Sayid is seen on a television while Kate is in Sam Austen's office in What Kate Did
  • In Lockdown, Locke inspects a house that Nadia is planning to buy.
    • One Degree of Separation between Locke and Sayid.

Theories

  • Locke's dad could be the real Mr Sawyer, whom Sawyer (James Ford) wants to kill.
