CAN ANYONE RECORD THE MUSIC IN THE ORIENTATION FILM AND PLAY IT BACKWARDS. IT IS SUCH AN ODD TUNE I SUSPECT IT IS A SONG PLAYED BACKWARDS.

unlikely - it sounds like eastern themes (indian or chinese/japanese maybe)

Shall we title his Swan Orientation Film? The Pearl has a video, but someother hatch might have a film.

Second Orientation Film

Where did this second orientation film come from? There is a ton of good info in it if it is real.

The second film is faked. There is a misspelling ("4" and "5" switched) and the "film noise effect" is much less professional than in the original. Also it is suspicious that it only contains moving images of the original film - the rest is just text and as such easily forged.

It may not be Station "3 of 6"...

Am I the only one to find it suspicious, that the film never really says "Station 3 of 6" as is usually taken for granted? If you listen, it only says "3 of 6 - Orientation" and then "Station 3 - The Swan". To me this sounds more like there are 6 films, one of them being "Orientation." The total number of stations is still unsure. Since Dharma uses octagons in the logos and room shapes, it may be that there are 8 stations. Or maybe there are only 3 - it never really says that there are 6 stations... --aurora glacialis 06:18, 4 March 2006 (PST)

Film Footage from The Arrow

Why did they cut/paste from the second film to the first one? Why didn't they just watch the second film?

I think because on looking at them, Locke and Eko discovered that they matched up. --Circeus 06:52, 29 January 2006 (PST)

you also need some leader tape with old projectors and they would miss some of the film and since they knew where the splice was they decided to restore it properly. I get the feeling that Locke is the kind of man to do it right or not at all.

There is a little confusion for people too with the (internet faked) '2nd film' and the missing segment that Mr Eko finds and helps restore. --User:MRNasher

Here's a question: Why is the second film exactly like the first? Presumably every station would have a film tailored to it. Unless every station is geared to the electromagnetic experiment why would it concern pushing the button. And if it's the orientation film for Swan station, why have two of them?--Tricksterson 06:56, 16 March 2006 (PST)

I thought the filmclip that Mr. Eko found in the bible in Arrow was the missing piece from the Orientation film. Also, like MRNasher pointed out before, calling it 'the second film' does mix things up. --skks 05:55, 17 March 2006 (PST)

Appearently the correct name for the fake video is Initiative Classification (that title wouldn't make it any less confusing). But I still think every word about that film should be wiped off this site. --Jambalaya 09:07, 17 March 2006 (PST)

Third Orientation Film

I'm posting this more as an FYI than anything, but there's a third orientation film (for Station Five: The Goblet) that was mailed to the administrator of The Black Rock. He's trying to get confirmation if this as a real film or not and it seems likely to be faked. But the jury's still out right now...--Jmast7 09:41, 27 March 2006 (PST)

Urk, not another one :-/ --Jambalaya 11:41, 27 March 2006 (PST)

Good grief... what a lousy fake. "Jury's still out," my ass. One can hope that any genuine addenda to the orientation films will be more interesting (and. perhaps. talk. a. little. fas. ter.). --Joezoo 12:18, 27 March 2006 (PST)

I think it's a good one! Of course one knows it is a fake: it is quite long and the "coincidence" of "5 of 6 procedures" and "station 5" is just too much (it already was 3 of 6 orientation" for "station 3". Also some passages are almost the same as in "Orientation" and should not have to be in a different film.

And of course the "story" how it reached us basically proves it is a fake, and I guess one could find some other things that are not perfect (like mentioning the "Internet" and giving way too much clear information which is very untypical for Dharma ;-) ), but the Video-destruction-filter is very good and the stage and/or merging effects are quite good. Compared to the first fake, this one is really not bad. --aurora glacialis 12:23, 27 March 2006 (PST)

I agree with Joezoo. What a lousy fake! The acting is horrible. The information obviously made up and useless. --Stew Erickson 05:00, 29 March 2006 (PST)

"old" and "new" film images

Where does the shots on the image with Marvin Candle come from? What does "old" and "new" film means, exactly? This is completely unclear to me. I think it would be nice to explain this in the text. --Ehabkost 17:54, 14 April 2006 (PDT)

I suppose it's about the orientation film found in Swan vs. the clip Mr. Eko found from Arrow, either that or the real orientation film vs. the fake one. I've lost track myself. --skks 18:13, 14 April 2006 (PDT)
User:Jambalaya explained it to me, and confirmed your explanation: it is the film found in The Swan vs. the part found in The Arrow by Mr. Eko. Thanks for the explanation! --Ehabkost 10:28, 18 April 2006 (PDT)

orientation film oddities (prolly irrelevant)

I was bored so I started playing around with the orientation film. Extracted it from the .mov and started checking it out frame by frame. Some oddities found:

Nonsense1

these pop up in the start & the middle of the clip

Nonsense2

this seems intentional, can't think why though

Hate to state the obvious, but these do bare a resemblance to a star constellation, which one I dont know though.

  • The first one looks like stars to me--anyone recognize the constellation? It could be an inverted picture of the constelalation Cerberus. (see link [1]) That second one is where the film kinda skips for a second, right? I think that was just to give the effect that the film is old (or possibly edited at that point). Good find. They are both pretty neat. --Sid67 09:07, 22 April 2006 (PDT)

Interesting that it is inverted Cerberus, I had a conversation with Skks in which he noted that the screencap of ursa major is also inverted, and that the only way the stars would appear like this would be many light years away from earth! Have we uncovered something MAJOR here? Morrison

Surprisingly, it looks a lot like Cygnus. --skks 16:50, 22 April 2006 (PDT)
In the dome one, the second frame of the set has a part of the computer models missing, the top section of the box on the left. The next frame after this one, as we can see in the picture, is of a 'jumping' film and then it goes back to the dome setup being exactly the same it is throughout the clip. Even with high compression, things just don't magically disappear for a frame and come right back - so I don't think this is totally unintentional. --skks 09:44, 22 April 2006 (PDT)
  • It looks to me like these oddities were probably inserted to make the picture noisy and unstable, so that it actually looks like an old film.

Theories

Having watched the film again a few times, Ive still got a problem with the fact he says "thankyou" at the end. I think what Im getting at is that you usually thank somebody for doing something for you, so is it possible that all of the survivors are there of their own free will, they actually signed up for the experiment and experience. Each person has something they are running from and a reason to be there, I suspect that as the flashbacks develope we will see each character approached by the recruiters and have the proposition put to them.

This is ofcourse assuming that the orientation film was meant for the survivors. --skks 19:54, 22 April 2006 (PDT)

I think the Hanso tv ad and website supports the claim that they all signed up for it, the ad itself looks like its selling a miracle or a holiday, they all have a reason to be there. If Bernard researched and found Isaac to heal Rose, there's a good chance he found out about the Hanso organisation and their life extension project. Hurley and or Libby would have an interest in the Mental Health projects.
