Tom wore a fake beard during numerous encounters with the survivors of Oceanic Flight 815 to help perpetuate the illusion that he and the Others lived an austere and primitive life in the jungle. The first instance was when he and three Others intercepted Michael, Jin, and Sawyer on the raft and demanded they hand over Walt. (Exodus - Part 2) Later, when Tom and the Others met with Jack, Locke and Sawyer in the middle of the jungle, he again wore the beard. (The Hunting Party)
Tom first appeared without the beard when he spoke with Ethan about him bringing in Claire before finishing the "list." When Kate, Claire and Danielle discovered the station, Kate looked in one of the lockers and discovered a wardrobe filled with ragged clothes, as well as the beard and the theatrical glue with which Tom most likely glued it to his face. After capturing Jack, Kate, Sawyer and Hurley, the Others brought them to the Pala Ferry Dock to await the arrival of Ben. Before Ben arrived, Kate told Tom that they knew his beard was fake. Tom removed the beard, commenting that it was very itchy. (Live Together, Die Alone)
