What can I (we) do to help out?

Is there anything a normal user like me can do to help with fixing the vandalism? Marking pages that need reverting or something since we can't revert them on our own? I'd like to pitch in. -pbaehr

the first time I post here and a kid slams me

I have a link to this site at several places I post and I fiqured ok it is time to start adding because I came here so much. and the kid call what I post lame. Not a friendly way of being welcomed!!!

Sure

Sure- I'd be happy to do that. -Novajoe23

I'll be adding info again soon

I've been quiet lately since I still haven't been able to see last week's episode. I'll be making updates again soon though since I should be able to see it tonight. --chrisbliss18 08:21, 24 October 2005 (PDT)

spammer again

Looks like you'll need to block another domain. The spam that you blocked yesterday is back up again.

To answer your question...

Up to you really. I'm mostly using this as a means for getting to know Wiki, so if you're comfortable with me having such privs, then fine. Note that I probably won't keep up this pace forever, just having fun doing it right now. --Circeus 18:45, 27 December 2005 (PST)

Cool, and thanks...

There is a reason why I'm targeting characters first :) --Circeus 08:32, 28 December 2005 (PST)

Hey...

No other wiki thoughts right now, at least not related to Lost. What is there to maintain on the software side? (not sure I want to get that deep anyway right now), I don't think I blocked my email so if you want to be more specific, feel free to email me --Circeus 14:08, 29 December 2005 (PST)

Hah!

A writer for Lost! I wish! Then I'd be making boku-bucks. I'm just really good at holding facts inside my head and thing things through. I also figured that the best way to bring it all together was work through my notes (yes I keep notes on the show, best way to solver a mystery) and whats in my head. What here do you think needs more work? --Circeus 22:42, 30 December 2005 (PST)

Good to know...

...about blacklisting SPAMMERS, that sounds like a good strategy. --Circeus 13:32, 4 January 2006 (PST)

You need to jump in here...

There's a User who I keep banning who just keeps making new Users and making the same or similar changes on the site. Usernames so far have been Bob, Bobby, and Bob the Builder. This started with him replacing the Hurley image which I rolled back. He did it several more times, and I finally just banned him. This was as Bob. He then registered as Bobby, and made the same change again, and then trashed my User page. Another ban. Then today he re-registered as Bob the Builder, created a whole new image (using the same image he'd been using to replace the Hurley image) and then changed the Hurley page. I rolled back, deleted the image, and then banned Bob the Builder. Something more permanent is needed. --Circeus 10:21, 17 January 2006 (PST)

Not sure...

...who you'd want to promote to an Admin. Also the Bob guy re-attacked the site again today. I cleaned it up, and his new account was banned.

Season 2 Nav Template

I've been monkeying around, trying to get a good navigation template for the LOST Season 2 Episodes. How's this one? The main problem is trying to find something somewhat space saving, but let me know what you think of it. Thunderbird 12:48, 5 February 2006 (PST)

Spam & Easy Revert

Hi. Isn't there a way to throttle spamming? Like we discussed in Main Page Talk - maybe require registration before someone can edit articles, so anonymous users can only edit Talk-Pages? That way, it would be easier to block spammers. I don't remember if giving a valid email adress is part of the registration - if not, it probably should be. I have another question: Is there an easy way to revert an edit? If an edit is only minor or someone just added a line it is easy, but sometimes people change many single words and sentences and that's tidious work to revert... --aurora glacialis 05:34, 28 February 2006 (PST)

Registered users only hack

This link has been brought to my attention, it explains how to disable edits from anonymous users while allowing them to still participate in talk pages, it might be an answer to thwarting the havoc spammers and vandals are making these days. †††GodEmperorOfHell††† --07:21, 6 March 2006 (PST)

I read the novelisation "Secret Identity" by Cathy Hapka today.

Sigh - Spam attack again

Hi, Admin. Can you please try to prevent this. I think there have been 3 major Spam or Vandalism attacks in the last 2 days. Please consider using the hack mentioned above to restrict editing of articles to registered users that give a valid email adress. only that way, blocking spammers can have an effect - blocking IPs won't do anything since most people don't have a fixed IP. I can change my IP in mere seconds if I want...and so do others. But if someone has to register with a valid email adress and gets banned, he'd have to get a new email adress and register again, which is hopefully more work than fan. Except for Bob of course, but we have to deal with him. --aurora glacialis 03:27, 19 March 2006 (PST)

Nice to hear from you...

As you have seen, in the past weeks I have been handling the vandals and spammers and even a Bob attack. It's been very exciting to work here. hope the hacks on wiki software work. THanks for everything and don't dissapear!. †††GodEmperorOfHell††† --07:39, 21 March 2006 (PST)

Another Bob Attack

How is external scripting supported in MediaWiki? The patterns like the picture, n+5 edits every minute etc. do seem to repeat everytime he does his thing. Wouldn't be too difficult to perl some up, either within the php or at system level via analyzing server logs. I doubt Lostpedia is the only wiki out there that has had similar people around, meaning someone probably has done something already. Ofcourse, I'm too lazy to google or script myself, I'm in the suggestion end of things naturally. :) --skks 00:03, 22 March 2006 (PST)

I did a couple of whois checks on bobby's ips and they go mostly GB & USA, so maybe a spoofer. Is the SORBS flag ($wgEnableSorbs) enabled in the wiki? That would kill him if he's a proxy-rider, beyond that there's always the context ban ($wgSpamRegex). Content ban would be especially effective with him as he always does the same things.--skks 09:14, 24 March 2006 (PST)

FYI - Sorbs has been enabled for Months. --Admin 20:20, 24 March 2006 (PST)

It would come to reason that the attacker has a dynamic ip, so blocking individual ones isn't a very long-term solution (it can take a minute or less to have a dynamic ip changed). If blocking an entire ISP isn't too much, to get rid of Energis House UK, from who's network most of the attacks have come from, these rangeblocks *should* do the trick:

84.64.0.0/16
84.65.0.0/16
84.66.0.0/16
84.67.0.0/16
84.68.0.0/16
84.69.0.0/16
84.70.0.0/16
84.71.0.0/16
81.76.0.0/17
81.77.128.0/17

Energis House probably has more ips in their pool, but these are the ones that have been used lately.

I wasn't sure if you were ok with this, or if sysops had range-blocking rights ($wgSysopRangeBans = true;) so I didn't do it... but this is a way. --skks 06:31, 27 March 2006 (PST)

Don't let anyone register themselves with a nickname containing "bob"

Could this be done? A total ban on nicknames that contains *bob* ? And a total ban on using the filename ChildMolestor.jpg? --158.36.241.118 05:02, 24 March 2006 (PST)

That won't stop him. He'll just use a different name like B0B (with a zero). Also - from today's attack it appears he is now using a Vandalbot to perform his vandalism. Implementing Edit Throttling may at least slow down this type of attack.
Jabberwock    talk    contribs    email   - 07:36, 24 March 2006 (PST)

Don't know about that. He seems to be obssessed (or is that bobssessed?) with those themes. If cut off he might abandon his attacks. It's at least worth trying while adding a note on the front page explaining why.--Tricksterson 09:09, 24 March 2006 (PST)

All my work is done by hand, I'm proud of that. It just takes experience. No bots for me! All I ask is that you put the appropriate image on Hurley's page. Maybe try for only a week? We can do a deal! 217.172.183.219 10:32, 24 March 2006 (PST)

It's my experience that people like this are too small to get any recognition in real life and try to get some online as it's the only thing they're capable of. The best way to deal with this is usually ignoring, when they realise that they can't get any attention - they'll give up and move on to bothering some other community. Kinda sad really. --skks 12:26, 24 March 2006 (PST)

What's with this obsession of Hurley??? --aurora glacialis 13:43, 25 March 2006 (PST)

Probably someone who has teased him at kindergarten (possibly this Oliver Mitchell) looks a bit like Hurley and now he's having his little revenge online since he's not man enough to do it in person. --skks 06:37, 27 March 2006 (PST)

Sysop

Whoa! That was quick.Thanks man!--skks 23:27, 24 March 2006 (PST)

I have to agree - Thanks, too... --aurora glacialis 11:20, 25 March 2006 (PST)

I have a question - does your server distinguish between Browsers? I cannot see (diff)-pages in my linux non-standard browser - they appear as regular article pages with current revision. --aurora glacialis 10:47, 26 March 2006 (PST)

It must be a problem with the way your browser interprets the CSS. I'm not a CSS expert so I can't even really try to debug it for you. Does it work with standard Linux browsers? --Admin 11:37, 26 March 2006 (PST)

It works with firefox etc. I looked at the html, but there it is the same - the differences are invisible, so it can't be CSS. I get the same odd result when I copy an url to the wget command, which should just get the page and save it as a text file. So my guess is, that it is some kind of protection against robots. --aurora glacialis 11:44, 26 March 2006 (PST)

Yeah, it probably is something that was enabled to deal with annoyances like Bob. --Admin 13:31, 26 March 2006 (PST)

As for wget, one can use the -U flag and specifying an agent string (fex. wget -U="Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; de; rv:1.8) Gecko/20051107 Firefox/1.5" http://whatever.you.want) and the same usually goes for browsers. Also, in mediawiki the css is linked to the php/html outside the actual page and it's usually chmodded so that the user can't even view it, so it can still be a css-problem with the browser, then again, it could also be a javascript problem. --skks 05:23, 27 March 2006 (PST)

Bit of a Concern...

Hi,

My name is Brian, and I am an administrator of the LOST Wiki over at Wikia. Recently, our main page came under attack from vandals who claimed to be acting on the part of Lostpedia. I know this cannot be true, but I would still like your site's help in avoiding such confrontation. Each of our sites are massive catalogues of LOST information, and each have well over 500 pages of information. We could even collaborate resources. Such hinderances, however, only slow down the expansion of each of our sites. I thank you for any help you can offer in this matter, and wish you the best of success in your endeavours here.

PS - I go by the same username (JackAttack) over on our wiki as well, if you feel the need to contact me there.

EDIT- After reading the above comments, it appears you have had problems with a fellow named "Bob" as well. It seems we have a common problem now ;)

unprotect page

Can you unprotect Hurley? Something odd is happening when looking at Special:Whatlinkshere/Hurley. It shows the page pointing to itself. Hurley also shows up on Special:Whatlinkshere/Polar Bear. If it's unprotected, someone can edit it and hoepfully correct the fluke. -- Lostpedian 07:17, 7 April 2006 (PDT)

The contents of the Hurley page are:

#REDIRECT [[Hugo "Hurley" Reyes]]

This has been protected in the past because it is a favorite page for vandalism by a user named "bob". I unprotected the Hugo "Hurley" Reyes page this week since the new episode was hurley-centric. I resaved the Hurley page with underscores instead of spaces. Either the re-save or the underscores appears to have fixed the problem.    Jabberwock    talk    contribs    email   - 07:54, 7 April 2006 (PDT)

Admin Status

Hey Kevin,

I am fairly new to your site, but have been a Lost addict since the beginning of the series... I have been adding some new posts, cleaning up grammar, links, etc. and was wondering how you can become an admin on this site? I run a computer lab for a college and have lots of network experience. This is the first wiki I have been active on and would like to contribute more... Let me know when you get a chance.

Thanks,

Matthew --MaNiFeX 16:18, 12 April 2006 (PDT)

PS - Lostpedia is my main source of Lost info, I love the site!

Thanks for the compliments! The best way to become a sysop is to become an active member of the community here. When it comes time for lostpedia to add more sysops, we make the decision based on who's the most active and helpful. Thanks for the note. I will keep you in mind for future sysop positions! --Admin 21:50, 13 April 2006 (PDT)
Sweet. Lemme know if you need anything. I just got all the Lost books and am about to devour them and post reviews! If I have suggestions for consolidating articles (all the different Psalms) how would you like me to post them? Take Care, --MaNiFeX 21:38, 19 April 2006 (PDT)

My Idea

I have an idea. I also use Wookieepedia, the Star Wars Wiki. [1]. They write their articles in a paragraph format. I was wondering if maybe we should convert to a paragraph format. I think it looks a lot cleaner, and it's more thorough. I could do the converting, with some help from the other SysOps. We could then put a notice on the Main Page saying that "LostPedia is now writing articles in a paragraph format. Please do not edit pages in a bullet form." What are your thoughts? -- Novajoe23 17:12, 13 April 2006 (PDT)

I'm not an admin, but personally I like the bullet format better. It's cleaner, easier to read and more to the point. If I wanted "Lost" in book form I'd, well, buy a book. People come here and contribute to get facts, discuss theories, and have a handy reference guide; I think the bullet format fullfills that perfectly. Just my $.02 --Jmast7 17:19, 13 April 2006 (PDT)

Logo Contest II

Just a thought, but 150x150 px makes an awful small logo on clothing. --skks 14:37, 18 April 2006 (PDT)

True, I'm hoping the artist will have a larger version, I don't know much about designing for clothes. :) --Admin 21:03, 18 April 2006 (PDT)
It depends...typically you want to print images for clothing at at least 150 dpi, (or as much as 200) meaning that a 10" square image would need to be about 1500x1500 pixels...but if you just want a little logo on the corner of the shirt, you could get away with something more like 800x800 probably. unprotection, and resolution assistance

Please unprotect LostPedia:Manual of Style (proposed) and move that page to LostPedia:Manual of Style. A basic set of guidelines is very valuable, and the specific of those guidelines can always be discussed and changed later. Admin Jabrwocky7 protected it from being moved. He may be an admin, but he's appearing quite disrepectful of me and using his admin powers to enforce, rather than discuss. Admins should be on an equal level to other contributors, with the exception that they are trusted with some additional maintenance tools. They should not use those tools to simply enforce their will. -- Lostpedian 13:54, 21 April 2006 (PDT)

Admin, please check this guy's talk page and the straighht dope on him.†††GodEmperorOfHell††† --15:38, 21 April 2006 (PDT)

This insulting comment is exactly the sort of thing that is unacceptable, and something that can lead to your admins running off valuable contributors. -- Lostpedian 17:47, 21 April 2006 (PDT)

I believe if you were to look into the activites of GodEmperorOfHell, you'll find that he's prone to emotional reactions and poor attitude. I ask that you re-evaluate whether someone like him is the sort of person you want as a sysop, because his actions make this place hostile and unproductive. He's snide, insulting, and your decision to promote him on Jan 28th seems largely based on he did a lot of work he did on that day alone. Working hard does not equal working well with others. -- Lostpedian 07:02, 24 April 2006 (PDT)

I understand you and he don't get along. Not everyone will always get along with everyone else. The reason I promoted him to SysOp when I did, is not really relevant. The fact is, he has done a great job as a sysop thus far. The fact is, you are the only person that has had a problem with him @ Lostpedia. I don't intend on demoting him, so I hope you guys can just agree to disagree and try to get along. --Admin 16:02, 24 April 2006 (PDT)

Season 2 spoilers

Im a new user to Lostpedia. Its a good site but i find it frustrating that on the season 2 page there is a section for spoilers in upcoming episodes. I feel the site should be used to gateher information from what we see. I dont want the show to be ruined before I watch it. For upcoming episodes you should only list the title of the episodes, writers and director. Thats just my opinion on it. I should also state i am in Canada and see the first airings of episodes. -- dicola

Hello, Thanks for your feedback and welcome to the site! Unfortunately, there doesn't seem to be an easy way to protect viewers from spoiling episodes. Which is why I personally never look at the site until I am current on LOST. --Admin 18:48, 25 April 2006 (PDT)

Wiki-standard template for contest entries

Hi,

I noticed that you're using HTML for the contest entries. After a bit of tinkering, I've created a Wiki-template for contest entries, using Wiki's simplified built-in table feature. You can see how it works on my User subpage User:Leflyman/contest, using the original "example" content you put up. One change I made in the template version was to make the entry number a sub-heading, so as to allow individual entries to be edited. The TOC can be turned off at the top of each Contest page.

If you feel it would make it easier to edit/maintain the contest entries, please feel free to use it. And if you'd like, I can help convert the current pages to the template format.  :)

Regards, —Leflyman 22:57, 26 April 2006 (PDT)

It's a great idea. We're so close to finishing this contest that we'll keep going with the html standard. We will definitely use something like this for future contests... maybe we can use something like this for voting. Admin 11:40, 29 April 2006 (PDT)
  • That's basically what I was thinking, as this contest is closing shortly; it's an example of something to try for future usage. —Leflyman 13:44, 29 April 2006 (PDT)

Logo Contest 2 --qualifications/"semi-final"

I'm currently making a page that lists all the entries that qualify according to the rules. Some of the images don't have transparent backgrounds, use copyrighted images and aren't named correctly etc. I'll be making my choices based on that, but ofcourse if you or the other sysops feel that there should be some leniency on the rules - they can vote whichever logos they like. I was thinking of going with 5 best logos where the best one gets 5 points, second best 4 etc. So when the other sysops have cast their votes we should hopefully have a couple of logos with more than 5 points for the final vote. --skks 23:38, 1 May 2006 (PDT)

Shop

Hi Admin man (Sorry, don't know your name!). I was thinking, seeing as you already collect some money for bandwidth via adverts, and we place our trust in you that your not going to be making a profit, how about you set up an Amazon Refer Account for the main territories so we can make a little money for the site? We can link to the iTunes episodes, ABC streamed episodes etc too... Make us a strong sticky Lost portal. If we put this on the front page, which you know I'm very active in looking after, it would be a strong addition, and as I say would make our site more "sticky". --Plkrtn 11:17, 3 May 2006 (PDT)

This is a great idea. I will work on it this weekend. The ads on this site do not nearly cover the costs of operating the wiki! I promise no one is getting rich. :) Admin 10:53, 5 May 2006 (PDT)

Logo Finalists

When are we going to pick the final 10 to 15 finalists? Is the SysOp nomination period closed? I think we should make a new page (or we could put it on the main contest page) for the actual voting process. <<Novajoe23>> 09:59, 6 May 2006 (PDT)

Hi Novajoe, I'm going to work on that this weekend. I'm planning on building a template that displays all of the different logos and then creating a page for voting. Possibly even a page for each logo's votes. --Admin 16:01, 6 May 2006 (PDT)
